How to Make a Pillow Case

This pillowcase will have an inner-flap that conceals the pillow form.

Supplies needed for each pillow case

  • 1 yard of fabric, preferably a cotton print
  • Thread

Instructions for pillow case:

Make a pillow for ConKerr Cancer, a wonderful organization that donates pillow cases to sick children.
How to sew pillow pic 1 Cut a piece of fabric 21" x 27". This will be the back.
Cut a second piece of fabric 21" x 34". This will be the front.
How to sew pillow pic 2 Using the zig-zag stitch on your machine, sew around all four edges of both front and back pieces. Trim any loose threads.
How to sew pillow pic 3 On the pillow case back, choose one of the short sides and fold it over half an inch toward the fabric wrong side. Pin in place.
How to sew pillow pic 4 Tack seam and remove pins.
How to sew pillow pic 5 On that same edge, fold it over by half an inch again, toward the wrong side. Pin it and tack it again, then remove pins.
How to sew pillow pic 6 Machine stitch your twice-turned seam. Remove all tacking. The raw edge should now be completely hidden, giving it a nice clean look.
How to sew pillow pic 7 On pillow case front, repeat the last 4 steps on one of the short sides.
How to sew pillow pic 8 The pillow case front is longer than the back. Fold it over towards the wrong side by 6.5 inches or so that it is the same length as the pillow case back. Pin along each edge.
How to sew pillow pic 9 Sew along each folded edge with a 1cm seam allowance Remove pins and trim any loose threads.
How to sew pillow pic 10 Put pillow front and back fabrics right sides together with the folded and sewn edges at the top. Pin, tack machine round the other 3 sides. Seam allowance should be 1.5cm thereby concealing previous stitches. Remove tacking.
How to sew pillow pic 10 Turn pillow case right side out.
