Instructions for scrunchie:

This is a super simple project, so make a few!
Scrunchie used as lid of jar
How to sew scrunchie pic 1 Cut rectangle of fabric approximately 30" long by 4.5" wide.

Using your machine, zig-zag round all four edges, to prevent fraying.
How to sew scrunchie pic 2 Fold right sides together along long edge.
How to sew scrunchie pic 3 Place pins perpendicular to long edge so that you can sew directly over the pins.
How to sew scrunchie pic 4 Remove pins after seam is sewn 1 cm from zig-zagged edge.
How to sew scrunchie pic 5 Turn tube right side out. A trick for doing this is to attach a string to a safety pin. Holding string, let safety pin fall through the tube till it comes out the other end. Afix safety pin to the fabric and simply pull the string back the way it came, making sure fabric is turning in on itself.
How to sew scrunchie pic 6 Cut as much elastic as you feel you need in your scrunchie. Mine was 10 inches. Using the safety pin, pin one end of the elastic to the end of the scrunchie. Pin the other safety pin into the elastic only. Using this second safety pin as your guide, push the loose end of the elastic through the scrunchie tube.
How to sew scrunchie pic 7 Remove safety pins and overlap the elastic edges by about 1 inch.
How to sew scrunchie pic 8 Using the zig-zag stitch on your your sewing machine, sew both elastic ends together. We can use the zig-zag stitch because it will expand when stretched, whereas a straight stitch will snap
How to sew scrunchie pic 9 Make sure stitches are strong.
How to sew scrunchie pic 10 Insert one end of the tube into the other end. Fold top edge over so raw edges are hidden. Pin it in place.
How to sew scrunchie pic 11 Now comes the hand sewing part! Simply sew both ends of the tube together. Try to get your stitches as small as possible. To do this you use your needle to pick up only one single weave from each end of the scrunchie. Keep your stitches close together and strong. They will be almost invisible.
